About the Artist
Zander is a Japanese-American artist working and living in New York City. He spent his childhood in Hamamatsu where he received classical beaux-arts training from an early age. Form and color are crucial partners in Zander’s work: he renders monstrous and grotesque figures with expressive, alien-like features and unexpected shades of color. His distinctive humanoids are often presented in a psychedelic aesthetic, with eyes or mouths contorting and twisting across the canvas.
Zander has always had his hand in the city’s emerging art scene. When he was a teen, he produced a documentary film series about the youth in NYC. After studying art in Paris, Zander founded State of Wonder NYC, an exhibition series for young native-New Yorkers. In addition to his visual produc-tions, music has always been at the core of his practice as an artist. Zander currently makes music under the artist name malozarpla.
