Installation and exhibition invite for Fort Gansevoort

In collaboration with the gallery, this vintage telephone was sourced to resemble Nelson Sullivan’s old phone and played documentary audio of his archived voicemails during the exhibition A Look Back: 50 Years after Stonewall. The handset was gutted and retrofitted with equipment which rerouted the speakers on the corded phone to a hidden audio source so guests could “listen in” on Sullivan’s conversations with his pals. Accompanying the audial exhibition content was a supercut of Nelson Sullivan’s films documenting NYC nightlife during the AIDS crisis era.

Special thanks to the NYU Fales Library & Special Collections for all archival materials.
